Cape Town - A Ceres man has been found guilty of murdering a gay man in an apparent hate crime in March 2014.

Christo Oncke, 29, was found guilty in the Ceres Circuit Court of the Western Cape High Court, the Cape Times reported.

He allegedly tortured and killed Dawid Olyne, 21, who was openly gay.

It was reported at the time that a group of youths, aged between 14 and 18, were drinking near a local dam when Oncke invited them to come and watch how he was "going to kill a moffie [gay man]". They then witnessed him bash the victim on his head with a brick and jump on his face. Olyne was apparently tied up with wire, and made groaning sounds throughout the ordeal. They all left and Olyne's body was found the next day.

In his plea agreement, Oncke said Olyne had made a sexual pass at him and they had an altercation, but he did not mean to kill him. However, Judge Siraj Desai said Oncke was not co-operative and gave different versions of events.

Eyewitness News reported that sentencing was postponed to February to allow Oncke to undergo a psychological assessment.

Meanwhile, a 15-year-old is set to appear in the Wolseley Magistrate's Court on Friday in connection with the murder of Michael Titus, who also went by the name Phoebe, on December 27. Titus was allegedly stabbed to death during an argument after the youth called him a "vuil moffie"(dirty gay man), the Cape Times reported.

- An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Oncke was found guilty following a plea agreement.
