Johannesburg - One person was killed when five cars crashed into each other on the N3 in Pinetown near the Richmond Road off-ramp in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said that nine people were injured.

"ER24 paramedics and other services arrived on scene and found the area in chaos. Upon assessment of one man who was found trapped in a badly damaged light delivery vehicle, it was found that he sustained multiple severe injuries.

"Sadly there was nothing that could be done for the man, believed to be in his 20s. He was declared dead," said Bodasing.

The other patients were found walking around the scene. They sustained minor to serious injuries.

Four of the patients were transported to hospital, while the other five refused to go.

It was not immediately clear what led to the crash.
