Bloemfontein - A Free State man mauled by a dog and robbed by two men in Bethlehem is recovering but still in shock after the attack, his brother said on Wednesday.
Elvis Mofokeng said his brother, Masopha, 43, was on his way to work on Saturday morning when he was attacked by two men and their dog.
"Two men approached him, beat him up, before setting the dog on him.
"We rushed him to hospital and the doctors managed to stitch him up and gave him painkillers. He is recovering from home. It is very painful the way those robbers attacked him using the dog."
He could not identify the breed of dog used in the attack. The thieves fled with Masopha's cellphone.
Free State police spokesperson Captain Zweli Mohobeleli said this was the second case in the area in which a dog had been used to threaten or injure the victim.
In May a 21-year-old woman was attacked in Church Street in Bethlehem by a man believed to be walking a dog around 23:00, said Mohobeleli.
The suspect allegedly took both her cellphones and threatened to set the dog on her if she screamed. She was pinned to the ground and raped.
No arrests had yet been made.
