Police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a man, believed to be in his 30s, was discovered hanging from a bridge on the N1, near Pretoria, on Tuesday.

"Police received an anonymous call saying someone is hanging from a bridge on the highway. Police proceeded to the scene and called the paramedics who certified him dead. Investigation is continuing to determine the motive," said SAPS spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela.

Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Sello Maremane condemned the behaviour of motorists, on the route between the Petroport Panorama filling station and the Wallmansthal Bridge, who took pictures of the incident and shared it on social media.

"This behaviour is unwarranted and punishable by law enforcement authorities since the deceased's family is not yet notified. Anyone found with the pictures or to be circulating them will face the full wrath of the law," said Maremane.

Maremane said that there were delays in traffic as a result of the incident.

Tshwane EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso said they arrived on the scene at 08:00 to find the man hanging by a rope.

He said they waited for the police to take pictures before firefighters retrieved the body.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown at this stage.
