  • The Metsimaholo Local Municipality will convene a council sitting on Friday to elect a mayor.
  • The EFF councillor who was elected mayor was forced to resign by the national party leadership because the ANC assisted her.
  • The DA and EFF plan to field candidates, while the ANC has yet to decide on its candidate.

The Metsimaholo Local Municipality in the Free State is set to convene a council sitting this week to elect a new mayor following the resignation of EFF councillor Selloane Motjeane who was forced to resign last week.

The council is set to meet on Friday to elect a replacement for Motjeane.

She was forced to resign last week after the EFF's national leadership told her to do so.

Metsimaholo council speaker Lucas Fischer told News24 the council would meet to elect a mayor and a chairperson of the municipality's Section 77 committee.

Both positions had seen EFF members being elected.

The EFF councillors were elected through the support of ANC councillors.

EFF leader Julius Malema said the party could not condone the ANC voting for the party, and that was why it was backing out of leading the troubled municipality.

The EFF is expected to nominate Motjeane as its mayoral candidate with Malema indicating last week the party would seek the DA's support to return her to the mayoral seat.

If the DA's convincing failed, Malema said the party would follow the same voting trend executed in other municipalities and back DA candidates.

Metsimaholo DA caucus leader Thulani Mbana said the party would nominate its candidate, Jeff Zwane, for mayor.

He said the EFF did not approach the DA to support Motjeane, and the DA had been firm on its stance not to support the EFF.

"In terms of our party's position, we are not voting for anyone, ANC or the EFF," Mbana said.

Fischer said the ANC had to decide who would stand as a mayoral candidate for the party.

The ANC has 16 seats in the 46-member council, while the EFF and DA have 12 seats each.

If the EFF follows through in its support, the DA would see its mayor elected.

This is the second time Metsimaholo has been left without a clear governing party.

The municipality was governed through an SACP-led coalition following the 2016 municipal elections.

It was placed under administration by the Free State government in February 2020.
