Police officers discovered skeletal remains in Lakeside near Vereeniging in Gauteng on Sunday.

Police sources told News24 a man was arrested after a woman reported that her boyfriend had buried remains under his bed.

When officers went to the man's home, they found a skull buried underneath the bed, officials at the scene said. After further digging, they discovered more remains.

The family of Nomvula Chenene, a woman who went missing in December, was notified after the discovery of the remains. The 35-year-old went missing after leaving a tavern in the Vereeniging area.

Chenene is the sister of former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates midfielder Bennett Chenene.

While the remains were not officially confirmed to be that of Nomvula, relatives at the scene said they feared the worst.

Gauteng police are yet to comment on the matter. Comment will be added once received.
