Cape Town - Two more businesses were targeted on Wednesday by armed robbers, following two mall robberies in Cape Town earlier in day.
Four men robbed Espresso Bakery in Section Street, Paarden Eiland, at 09:50 and held up staff and fled with cash.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said the four got away from the scene in a white Mercedes Benz.
In a separate incident in Athlone, a store was robbed earlier in the day.
Rwexana said while police are aware of the incident, no case was opened.
Claims of a robbery at Kenilworth Centre circulating on social media have been dismissed.
However, police confirmed that a jewellery store was burgled overnight, and the thieves fled with an undisclosed amount of the merchandise.
On Wednesday morning at 08:30, shots were fired at Vangate Mall in Athlone in an attempted robbery.
Shoppers and staff reported the shooting to the police who responded within minutes.
The gunmen, however, had already managed to flee in a getaway car.
Also at 08:30, two guards were accosted by four men as they were about to load money into an ATM at a bank in the N1 City Mall.
The robbers fled in a red Mazda with an undisclosed amount of cash as well as the two officers’ guns.
No shots were fired.
Following claims of a “lockdown” at the shopping centre, mall spokesperson Anthea Oostendorf said shops were “up and running” as normal.
