Cape Town – A 27-year-old man suspected of knocking down a group of tourists - killing a Swedish national and leaving five others injured - has been released on R5000 bail.

Table View police investigating officer Johan von Wielligh told News24 on Tuesday that Darrel Kevin Fouter appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's court on Monday.

In addition to Fouter’s R5 000 bail, his passport has been seized by authorities.

The case has been postponed to March 7.

Von Wielligh said one injured tourist remains in hospital, but is set to be released soon.

On Thursday News24 reported that following the accident, police arrested the 27-year-old man for culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Paramedics at the scene tried to save the young Swedish national, who sustained multiple injuries, but were unsuccessful.
