Mpumalanga alcohol traders arrested, fined

Mpumalanga - Mpumalanga police have warned the owners of taverns and bottle stores not to ply their trade outside their licensed operating hours.

This followed the arrest of six liquor dealers in Tonga, south of Komatipoort, on Reconciliation Day. They were fined a combined total of R9 000.

"We arrested six dealers yesterday and released them after they paid a fine of R1 500 each. If they are caught again, we will temporarily remove their licences," Tonga police spokesperson Lieutenant Mzwandile Nyambi said on Thursday.

Those found selling alcohol to children would be arrested, along with the children. He urged residents not to be drunk in public or to drink and drive.

He said police met local liquor dealers before the start of the festive season and they agreed to adhere to the conditions of their operating licences.
