The "Gordonia Butcher" from Springbok in the Northern Cape was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the attempted murder of his sister on Friday.
The Springbok Regional Court sentenced Devon Ovies, 33, for stabbing his sister multiple times during an altercation.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said Ovies was declared a state patient after he brutally murdered a colleague, Katrina Jagers, 50, at the living quarters of the hospital in Upington in 2015.
"On 20 December 2021, he received leave from the mental institution in Kimberley and was booked out under the supervision of his 39-year-old sister who resides in Concordia in Springbok," Kock added.
Police said on 6 January 2022 at 21:00 Ovies and his sister had an altercation concerning his house-arrest.
He then stabbed her 15 times in front of her two toddlers.

"He [then] fled in her vehicle from her house in Concordia but was arrested 30 minutes later in Okiep," Kock added.
Police said Ovies was sentenced to 14 years for attempted murder and four years for theft of the motor vehicle. The sentences will run concurrently.
