A lone gunman shot and killed an off-duty Philippi East policeman while he was sitting in a vehicle with friends on Wednesday night.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said Constable Khanyisa Ernest Sitofile was sitting with two friends when the gunmen walked up to them and fired into the vehicle.
Sitofile was taken to Lentegeur Hospital for emergency treatment, but died.
His two friends in the vehicle were wounded.
His death came as police were investigating the murder of Anti-Gang Unit detective Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear outside his home in Bishop Lavis on 18 September.
Potelwa said Sitofile had been based at the Philippi East police station for three and a half years.
He was from Khayelitsha.
Potelwa said his colleagues, who described him as a quiet man dedicated to his work, were devastated.
"The Western Cape [SA Police Service] management has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the constable's family and colleagues."
