A cache of explosives found in an abandoned house in the Mooi River area of KwaZulu-Natal have been identified.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the explosives were uncovered following an intelligence-driven operation by officers attached to the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit on Saturday.
Authorities confirmed the explosives were called "Viper Booster", generally used in mining.
"Although not confirmed yet, it is suspected that these explosives may have been intended for Automated Teller Machine (ATM) bombings and/or Cash-in-Transit (CIT) heists as similar explosives are known to have been used for this purpose before," said Naidoo.
"These types of explosives have been recovered previously as well."
While no arrests had been made, Naidoo appealed to anyone with information to contact the police.
"All information will be treated with the strictest confidence, and callers may remain anonymous."
