A one-year-old girl was rescued after she fell down a borehole in Phokeng in Rustenburg on Thursday.
The toddler reportedly fell into the uncovered borehole outside a residence.
When paramedics arrived at around 12:15, they found residents gathered at the scene.
"Upon further inspection, medics found that a girl, believed to be one year old, had fallen approximately eight metres down the borehole," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.
ER24, the Rustenburg Fire Department and Royal Bafokeng Mine Rescue, who arrived a short time later, used various rescue equipment, including an excavator, to rescue the girl. The operation lasted more than four hours.
Meiring said once the borehole was widened, a rescuer was lowered down into it. The rescuer then grabbed the girl's hand and lifted her to safety.
After rescuing the girl, paramedics assessed and transported her to a nearby hospital.
