Cape Town – A pilot died when his light aircraft crashed at a farm in Swellendam in the Western Cape on Monday, police said.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said officers were on the scene of the crash, which is believed to have occurred around 13:00.

The pilot was killed, but it was not clear if there were passengers on board, according to the SA Police Service Twitter account.

It is understood that the aircraft was an eight-seater plane and that pieces of the wreckage were scattered across a field.

The SA Civil Aviation Authority was not immediately available to comment.
