A plumber conducting maintenance found a foetus in a sewer line in Potchefstroom on Tuesday, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the plumber had been working on the line in a complex in Gerrit Maritz Street when he made the discovery and called for help.

"On arrival, paramedics found the body lying in the sewer. Unfortunately, nothing more could be done by paramedics," he said.

There were no further details about how the foetus ended up there.

The matter is under investigation.
