Police have launched a 72-hour manhunt for a group of suspects behind a CIT heist that took place at around 09:15 on Sunday in Silverton, east of Pretoria.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said guards were delivering cash to the Samcor depot in Vonkprop Street when a white BMW crashed into them and drove into a fence of the SAPS Crime Intelligence offices.

Mathe said the suspects then set the BMW alight.

"Nine more vehicles came towards them and started shooting. The vehicles were four Ford Rangers, two Toyota Hilux, a BMW, Mercedes and a VW Tiguan.

"The guards inside the van were pointed with AK-47 assault rifles and they were taken away from the van," Mathe said.

Thirty suspects were involved in the incident, according to the police spokesperson.

The van was bombed and money was taken.

The suspects also fled with two 9mm pistols and 30 9mm rounds belonging to the guards.

An undisclosed amount of money was also taken.

"One of the guards in the escort vehicle was shot in the upper body. He was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment," Mathe said.
