Eastern Cape police are investigating the possibility of a serial killer on the loose at a Lady Frere village after four people were discovered murdered inside their homes on Monday.

The gruesome discovery of the bodies of three women and a man, all with stab wounds, was made at the Zangqokweni Locality, Ndonga Administrative Area in Lady Frere, at eMalahleni local municipality.

Eastern Cape police provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga said she had learnt with shock and sadness of the "senseless killings".

Eastern Cape provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana said an ongoing investigation would reveal if the murders were the work of a serial killer.

"The crime happened yesterday so it is too early to say a serial killer was behind these murders, but we are not ruling out anything," said Kinana.

Kinana said: "According to information, police were summoned to the home of a 44-year-old woman at about 04:00 in the morning, 1 February 2021. Upon arrival, it was established that the woman had stab wounds. While police were still at the scene, they were informed of another woman, 72, who was also found dead in her house.

"Later, at about 07:00, two more bodies of a 75-year-old woman and a 88-year-old man were also found dead in their house. All the houses are in close proximity and all the victims had stab wounds."

Kinana said four cases of murder had been opened for investigation and the motive for the murders had not yet been established.

Ntshinga was due to visit the families of the deceased to offer support.

"Part of the provincial commissioner's visit is to check the progress of the investigation. She is very concerned about the killing of the elderly," said Kinana.

Ntshinga had ordered an immediate manhunt for the suspects.

"The 72-hour Activation Plan to track, trace and arrest the suspect/s has been established under the leadership of Detective Captain Lindile Sigcu. The plan entails the mobilisation of critical resources to ensure that all information, intelligence and/or evidence to successfully trace the suspect/s is utilised efficiently," said Ntshinga.

"We will not rest until the suspect/s are found and brought to book for this shocking and callous murder," added Ntshinga.

The Eastern Cape police called on anyone who may have any information on the whereabouts of the suspects to please contact Detective Captain Lindile Sigcu on 082 3026 989.
