Pretoria - A 21-year-old woman who allegedly acted as bait, by pretending to be a prostitute, lured an unsuspecting man into her apartment with an online advertisement only to have him robbed by her three accomplices, has been arrested.
The suspect appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday where she was formally charged with robbery and was granted bail of R1 500.
Police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela said the victim, a 29-year-old man from Pretoria West, allegedly agreed to meet with the suspect in Sunnyside last weekend after he responded to the woman's online advertisement.
“They went to the woman's flat, where he reportedly gave her R300 and sat on the bed, expecting to proceed with the business of the day,” said Mavimbela.
“Shortly thereafter about three men walked into the flat, after which the suspect left the victim with her alleged accomplices.”
“They allegedly took a further R400 from the victim, a Samsung S3 cellphone, bank cards and pin codes, but subsequently found no cash in the man's bank account.”
Police staged a raid on the suspect’s flat, and arrested the woman.
Mavimbela has some pertinent advice for online daters.
“The online daters are urged to go back to basics. When meeting a stranger, people should insist on doing so in a public.”
“If strangers agree to meet for reasons beyond just knowing each other better, they should rather opt for bed and breakfast outlets or hotels.”
The suspect is expected to appear in court on July 25.
