Johannesburg – Student leaders accused the South African Council of Churches (SACC) of being a government mouthpiece during their meeting in Randburg on Tuesday.

The SACC was holding closed meetings with various SRC leaders in an effort to find solutions to the #FeesMustFall student protests.

North West University Mafikeng campus Student Representative Council (SRC) president Benz Mabengwane told journalists he had no confidence in the SACC.

"The SACC is actually a mouthpiece of government. They came out to condemn violence, but none of them came out to hold government accountable. They want peace, but we can’t want peace in the presence of injustice," he said.

The SACC said they would also be engaging with vice chancellors to find resolutions for students.

Student leaders who were present at the meeting were from Stellenbosch University, Central University, Limpopo University, North West University and Walter Sisulu University. Noticeably, Gauteng student leaders did not attend the meeting.

Several Gauteng universities suspended registration after student disruptions last week. Students were demanding free registration for all academically qualified students.

Last year, students led protests across the country that began in mid-October in response to an increase in fees at South African universities. Protests started at Wits University and spread to the University of Cape Town and Rhodes University, before rapidly spreading to other universities across the country.
