Cape Town - Senior political journalist Mahlatse Gallens has been appointed political editor of News24.
Gallens joins News24 from the SABC, where she is deputy political editor for radio news, on October 1.
Gallens was recently elected chairperson of the South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) and has a long career in broadcasting in Africa.
After achieving a diploma in journalism from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 1999, Gallens joined PM Live as a producer in 2000. She worked as a senior reporter at the SABC before joining the BBC as South African correspondent in 2005.
Between 2007 and 2009 Gallens worked as foreign correspondent for the SABC in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya. On her return to South Africa, Gallens assumed senior duties in the SABC’s newsroom and was appointed deputy political editor for radio news in 2013.
Gallens, who hails from Limpopo, has received accolades for her reportage on health matters.
News24 editor Adriaan Basson said he was “extremely pleased” to have Gallens as part of the News24 editorial team.
“Mahlatse brings a wealth of institutional knowledge and experience to our dynamic reporting team. She is a multi-talented journalist who doesn't fear authority and is determined to tell the truth. South African politics is undergoing seismic change and Mahlatse is the perfect person to lead our coverage,” said Basson.
