An ecological burn of an area in Tokai, Cape Town, by SANParks late last month went seriously wrong when an unexpected temperature inversion caused respiratory problems for residents, threatening wildlife and the Constantia grape harvest.

The inversion trapped a thick pall of smoke over a large area of Tokai for three days.

The consequences of the fire raise questions about the permit conditions in terms of which the City of Cape Town authorised the burn.
