Durban – A private security company officer who was stabbed in the head while attempting to arrest a suspected thief in Verulam, north of Durban, has died.
Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram said one of his officers, Jagatheesan Mudaly, 44, who was stabbed in the forehead with a screwdriver in October last year, died in hospital on Tuesday night.
Balram on Wednesday said Mudaly was on patrol in a store in the Verulam CBD when he responded to a theft in the area.
"The officer pursued and apprehended the suspect, however, while attempting to handcuff him the suspect resisted arrest. During a scuffle the suspect stabbed the officer in the forehead with a large screwdriver. The suspect then fled the scene," Balram said
Balram said Mudaly was hospitalised at Umhlanga Hospital where he underwent several emergency operations.
