Cape Town – A fire that broke out on Signal Hill on Friday has been contained, a city official said.

Four city fire crews and the SA National Parks fire brigade were on the scene and had brought it under control, mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said.  

Meanwhile, wildfires in Somerset West and Simon’s Town during the past two weeks had cost the City of Cape Town R10 million, with three months of the fire season still ahead.

Executive director for safety and security, Richard Bosman, said this included the costs of staff, vehicles used to transport firefighting equipment, and the deployment of helicopters.

The total cost of fighting fires in these two areas had not been calculated yet as firefighting and monitoring was continuing, he said.
