Three people are expected to appear in a Western Cape court on Tuesday on extortion charges.
This comes after they were arrested during an operation in Botrivier in the Overberg on Thursday evening, after a local businessman was extorted of R300 000, police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said.
Police also confiscated cash, cellphones, two vehicles and a significant number of 3G cards and bank cards.
"Concerted efforts to deal with the crime of extortion (protection money) that has gripped a number of communities in the Western Cape, [are] beginning to yield results," Potelwa added.
Further investigations will determine if they are linked to other cases, she said.
The three people, aged 50, 39 and 29, are from Delft, Khayelitsha and Eerste River in Cape Town.
