The Mpumalanga High Court sitting in Breyten has handed a hefty sentence to a man found guilty of raping and murdering a young woman.
On Monday, Sbusiso Nkosi, 36, was sentenced to two life imprisonment terms for the rape and murder of Nomcebo Simelane, 23.
The court heard that on 5 September 2020 a friend of Nkosi had asked him to give a lift to Simelane from a liquor outlet in Breyten as it was late for her to travel alone at night, said police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli.
"Instead of taking her home, he took a different route, to a secluded area near the R36 Road. He then raped her and strangled her to death inside his vehicle. Nkosi then dumped her lifeless body in an open field and fled the scene. The following day, he realised that her cellphone was inside his car and he threw it into a sewage pipe in an attempt to ensure that no one would ever find out the truth," said Mdhluli.
Simelane's family reported her missing at the Breyten police station, and her body was discovered next to the R36 the next day.
Nkosi was handed two life imprisonment terms for the murder and rape and an additional three years' imprisonment for theft. The sentences will run concurrently.
