Cullinan – Protesters were trying to burn down the municipality’s building in Refilwe, Cullinan, on Thursday evening, police said.

Angry locals had tried to torch police Nyala vehicles with petrol bombs, Constable Connie Moganedi said from the scene.

“It’s a tense situation at the moment. We are monitoring it, but they are throwing rocks and trying to block access to the buildings with burning tyres,” she told News24.

She said police were trying to find a way into the building. Although they had stopped protesters from burning it down, the residents did manage to cause some damage.

Moganedi believed the protest could be related to unhappiness about service delivery, but she could not confirm this.
