WC education refuses to lie down after teacher who assaulted pupil, mother wins Labour Court battle

A Labour Court ruling that overturned the dismissal of a teacher who hit a 12-year-old pupil with a plastic pipe and then sat with his knee on the neck of the child’s mother is now the subject of an attempted legal challenge by the Western Cape Education Department.

The department is petitioning the Labour Appeal Court to hear its case for the dismissal of the teacher, who it is adamant should not be allowed to continue teaching – despite his claims that he had been rehabilitated after receiving treatment for anger management and conflict resolution.
