Durban - KwaZulu-Natal teachers and their unions were to thank for the province's matric success stories, but also needed to account for the shortfalls.

“The success stories in our results are a result of their contribution, but in the same breath we must own up to where we have not done well,” education department head Nkosinathi Sishi said in Durban during a technical briefing on the matric results released on Wednesday.

The province's pass rate had dropped by 9%, to 60.7%, which Sishi said was disappointing.

He called on teachers and their unions to ensure the "bounce back programmes", to help those matrics who had failed, were a success.

“We need to focus on results from the first quarter. Basing our intervention on matric results is basing it on results that mean nothing, because those learners are no longer in the system.”

The new curriculum with its new demands needed more teachers, he said.
