Weather Update: More rain for Cape Town, heat wave for the north of SA

As dam levels in the Western Cape move past the 70% mark, more rain has been predicted for the province on Tuesday. Those living in the northern part of SA, however, should prepare for a heat wave.

Warnings

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the northern parts of the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, the North West, the Free State, the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), in parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, and in the eastern parts of the Northern Cape and the Central Karoo district of the Western Cape.

Special weather advisories

A heat wave is expected in Gauteng, the eastern parts of Mpumalanga and most parts of Limpopo until Wednesday, persisting over the Western Bushveld of Limpopo until Thursday. Hot and humid weather is likely to cause uncomfortable conditions over the Lowveld of Mpumalanga and Limpopo on Wednesday.

Rain

Rain and showers are expected across the south-western parts of the Western Cape, spreading to the south coast and adjacent interior by Tuesday evening.

Temperatures

Minimum temperatures are expected to be cool across the central interior with warmer weather along the coastline, and hot weather for the East Coast and northern border.

Sutherland in the Northern Cape is expected to be one of the coldest places, dropping to a near-freezing 1°C.

Maximum temperatures are expected to remain cold in parts of the Western Cape and the West Coast. Cool weather continues along the adjacent coastline and the eastern parts of the Northern Cape.

Warm weather is predicted for the central and south-eastern parts of the country, including the northern parts of the Northern Cape, the Free State, the north-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and KZN.

Hot weather is expected along the northern parts of the country, including Gauteng, the North West and parts of Mpumalanga, with very hot conditions predicted along the northern border.

A few places in Limpopo and Mpumalanga are expected to reach a high of 41°C.

Pretoria is expected to reach a high of 34°C, while Johannesburg is expected to reach a high of 32°C and Bloemfontein a high of 29°C.

Along the coast, Cape Town is expected to reach a high of 15°C, while Port Elizabeth is expected to reach a high of 21°C, and Durban a high of 25°C.
