Wednesday's weather: Disruptive rainfall with possibility of flooding in some provinces

The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over the Free State; eastern and northern parts of the Northern Cape and the North West.

Similar stormy conditions are expected over Gauteng; the southern and eastern parts of Limpopo; the Highveld and escarpment of Mpumalanga; the western and southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the central parts of the Eastern Cape.

An orange level 5 warning was issued for disruptive rainfall leading to flooding of bridges, roads and settlements over the eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and the south-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

The weather in your region:

Gauteng will be cloudy and cool to warm, with widespread showers and thundershowers. The expected UVB sunburn index is high.

It will be cloudy and warm to cool, with widespread showers and thundershowers in Mpumalanga.

Cloudy and warm to hot conditions with scattered showers and thundershowers will occur in Limpopo.

There will be widespread showers in the south and east.

The North West will be cloudy and warm, with widespread showers and thundershowers.

It will be cloudy and cool to warm, with widespread showers and thundershowers in the Free State.

Scattered showers will occur in the south west.

The Northern Cape will be cloudy and warm, with scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers.

Otherwise, the province will be partly cloudy, with isolated thundershowers over the central parts.

Morning fog can be expected along the coast, where it will be cool.

The wind along the coast will be light south-westerly, becoming fresh southerly to south-easterly from the afternoon.

It will be fine in the west of the Western Cape. Otherwise cloudy to partly cloudy and warm to hot, with morning rain along the south coast.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-easterly, but strong along the south-west coast.

The expected UVB sunburn index is extreme.

The western half of the Eastern Cape will be cloudy and cool, with scattered showers and thundershowers.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly.

It will be cool in places along the east coast, with widespread showers and thundershowers across the eastern half of the province.

The wind along the east coast will be moderate to fresh southerly, becoming south-easterly in the evening.

KwaZulu-Natal will be partly cloudy in the north at first.

Otherwise, the west and south-west will be cloudy and warm to cool, with widespread showers and thundershowers. 

Scattered showers will occur in the north-east.

The wind along the coast will be moderate north-easterly in the north in the morning, otherwise moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is high.
