Octogenarian breaks all sorts of frequent flying records

Cape Town - Currently on his way to completing his 959th flight on Qantas in 50 years, John Martin has managed to clock up a whopping three million miles in the air.

Daily Mail reports that the 82-year-old Australian pensioner is set to reach this remarkable milestone on Tuesday and has no intention of retiring from flying anytime soon.

In the past half a century Martin, a former television news editor, has hopped on 148 long-haul flights to New York and 138 to London, with a whole array of shorter local commutes across Australia in-between.

Even more remarkable is the fact that he can name each of the 278 different aircraft he has flown on and also the ones he hasn't, news.com.au reports.

Yup, it's safe to say that since taking his first flight, Martin has been pretty much obsessed with the method of transport and has dedicated much of his life to travel.

Since he never got married and doesn't have any children, Martin often enjoys spending even Christmas day in the air, as he considers Qantas' staff family members.

While 959 notches on your flying belt may seem like a more than satisfactory number to retire on, Martin has no such plans. In fact, he is aiming to keep going until he reaches his 1 000th flight. And will probably continue his hobby well beyond.

So, what about all those miles he's racked up?

Well, as it turns out he doesn't allow them to add up too much and tends to use them as often as possible, stating that it would be a crying shame if he should die with unused miles behind his name.
