Cape Town represents Africa for great gay travel

Cape Town – In a newly released survey pertaining to gay summer travel and conducted in conjunction with the New York Times, SCRUFF, one of the leading gay dating apps in the world has voted South Africa's very own Mother City as one of their Top 5 a "surprisingly gay friendly” travel destinations in the world.

Cape Town ranks in 5th position, tying with Salt Lake City in Utah and Willemstead on the Island of Curacao.

The ranking is not only a confirmation that Cape Town is a hot and happening tourist destination for all, it also indicates positivity pertaining to safety in destinations with a history of anti-LGBT discrimination.

Cape Town is no stranger to inclusive, gay-friendly living and entertaining. Cape Town's Pride Festival, for example, began in 2001. Cape Town Pride is a Section 21 Non-Profit Organisation that is committed towards being inclusive and encompassing.

The annual Cape Town Pride Festival is a celebration of our wonderful diversity, and also creates awareness around issues impacting on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex communities locally and throughout Africa.

The SCRUFF survey received 1 333 responses from users all over the world. The app has over 10 million members worldwide.

The study was done to better understand the dynamics behind the SCRUFF guys' travel habits - why they travel, how much they spend, whether they travel alone, as well as information on where gay guys will and won’t travel.

One reason why travel is so important to SCRUFF is because gay guys travel differently - "gay guys travel more often than the general population," SCRUFF says. "And when they do travel, they spend more, often travel alone, and to different places."

92.56% of SCRUFF guys planned to travel during the northern hemisphere summer in 2016, and of them, 57% will travel alone to their destinations.

These unique traits of gay travel inspired an adding SCRUFF feature called Venture, a travel related feature that allows members to list the cities they will be traveling to. "We know that gay guys often travel alone and meet people at their destination, so SCRUFF Venture lets you announce your arrival to locals before you arrive and network with guys at your destination before you leave," SCRUFF says.

Venture registered over 120 000 trips in July alone, which is roughly 40% more trips than the average trip activity during the winter and spring months.

Results of the SCRUFF survey was compiled by two separate surveys.

The first survey received responses from 3 603 guys. It sought to determine overall travel trends among gay guys. SCRUFF asked guys if they plan to travel, whether they plan to travel alone, and how much they budgeted to spend.

The second survey, conducted in Collaboration with The New York Times Travel Section, was designed to dig deeper into more subjective questions. It asked the questions, 'where do gay guys like to travel and why?'

Times reporter Steven McElroy surveyed members about their off-the-beaten-path travel destinations, as well as their impressions about safety in destinations with a history of anti-LGBT discrimination.
