Couple make light of burning Dubai hotel with cheeky selfie

Cape Town - For many, the moment the country you are visiting or travelling through becomes victim to a terrorist attack or threat, the last thing you are expected to do is make light of the situation.

However, this did not occur to Instagrammer Abdul Rahman Alateeqi and his partner when the 63-story Dubai Address Downtown luxury hotel went up in flames on NYE.

The couple instead decided to take a selfie with the blazing scene behind them, captioning it: " Happy New Year My Dubai. May God Bless you and keep you safe. you always surprise us with the biggest fireworks." and posted it to Altaeeqi's Instagram.

Followers had mixed emotions about the pic posted an hour after fourteen people were injured in the fire at hotel — 500 metres from the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa explains NBC

For a short moment, some thought the hashtag 'couples on fire' could become a thing until the severity kicked in and the picture was deleted.

The Burj Khalifa's annual NYE fireworks took place amidst the fire which ravaged about 40 of the hotel's floors. The fire started on the 20th floor at 21:30 local time and quickly spread through the building.
