Magical Mpumalanga: 5 Family friendly activities to get up to

Cape Town – If you’re one of those travellers who thinks Mpumalanga is only good for one thing – the Kruger National Park – you’re wrong.

This lush green landlocked province in north-eastern SA has some of the most exquisite natural landmarks, and probably the best view in the country.

Here are five things your family will love about Mpumalanga:

The Sudwala Caves

The Sudwala Caves the oldest of their kind in the world, formed some 3 000-million years ago. Take an hour-long tour to appreciate all the amazing rock formations or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, you could always opt for the 5-hour Crystal tour, which will see you crawl on hands and knees for much of the way.

The caves also has a dinosaur park right next to the cave complex – perfect for the kids.

Drive the Panorama route to see the waterfalls

The Panorama route in Mpumaplanga is known for its steep cliffs from where impressive waterfalls run over this last edge of the Drakensberg escarpment.

The area has a high summer rainfall of up to 190mm per month, which ensures this area to have the best waterfalls in the whole of South Africa.

Relax at the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve

The Loskop Dam Nature Reserve offers lovely subtropical climate and summer rainfalls, providing a water rich playground all year round.

Besides the abundant wildlife, fishing is a major attraction. Carp, blue and red breasted bream, yellow fish, sharptooth catfish, eel and mudfish are abundant in the Loskop Dam.

And while the anglers are out catching the 'big ones', the rest of the family can splash around and have fun at one of the resorts.

If you’re not a water baby, hiking one of the many beautiful trails in the area would be for you. There are also multi-day hikes with overnight huts.

The Loskop Dam nature reserve has a number of resorts scattered around it, and offers affordable accommodation for the whole family.

Visit Pilgrim’s Rest

This quaint little village, which forms part of the Panorama Route, was declared a national monument in 1986 because of the town’s rich (literally) history. Pilgrim’s Rest is a living museum of South Africa’s gold rush era, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

It’s nestled in one of the most beautiful spots in the country, and offers the opportunity to relive history.

Check out the Blyde River Canyon and Bourkes’ Luck Potholes

The iconic Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons on Earth, and it may be the largest 'green canyon' due to its lush subtropical foliage.

The incredible natural landmark has some of the deepest precipitous cliffs of any canyon on the planet.

That in itself should be enough reason to show it to your kids, but the canyon has even more to offer.

The Three Rondawels, Bourkes’ Luck Potholes and God’s Window are all places you and your family will get to understand the true meaning of Mpumalanga - the place where the sun rises.
