Cape Town - Killer whales are often sighted in the waters around the Cape, and although we've seen some spectacular footage from places like Gansbaai, False Bay and Simon's Town, we've never seen an orca in the Langebaan Lagoon!
Photos posted to Atlantic Yachting Sailing School's official Facebook page show two orcas frolicking in the turquoise blue waters of Langebaan.
"What a privilege," the company posted to Facebook. Atlantic Yachting Sailing School is a Royal Yachting Association-Accredited sailing school and authorised agency of South African Sailing (SAS). They host career courses in sailing and were out at sea with students when the sighting occurred.
"Our students got to see these two beauts about 20 metres from their boat on the second day of their competent crew course," they say.
Students, along with the instructor Andre van der Linde, were able to photograph the orcas. According to Atlantic Yachting, "the killer whales were sighted South West of Schaapen Island on the 17 January at around 12:00.
"The whales seem young yet still a good size - about the same size as our yachts – which is 10 metres".
