#RideForALocal: Knysna all set for upcoming Cycle Tour

Cape Town - As holidaymakers make their way to the Garden Route in excitement of  the Knysna Oyster Festival, which is going ahead despite the recent devastating fires, they are advised to be cautious and prepared when travelling on SA’s roads.

The much-anticipated winter festival - The Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival - together with the Knysna Cycle Tour and ‘Phoenix’ Trail Run - begins on Saturday 7 July to the delight of many South Africans.

This year, The Momentum Knysna Cycle Tour celebrates its 30th year with new routes, rides and a new campaign called #RideForALocal.

Marketing director of the Knysna Cycle Tour, Andrew Finn says that he hoped many cyclists who were previously undecided about participating in the event will make the decision to enter a race this year and come to Knysna.

“We’ve launched a campaign, #RideForALocal because many of our local cyclists were affected in one way or another by the fires. Every single person who comes to the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival will be helping the locals to rebuild their lives and their businesses,” he says.

Late online entries will be accepted until 5 July with no penalties. Visit www.knysnacycle.co.za to enter now. A late entry fee will be charged for entries at registration. However, late entries will not be seeded.

Have a safe and pleasant ride

The Momentum Knysna Cycle Tour organisers share a few pointers to ensure the safety of cyclists:

  • Keep your eyes on the road at all times.
  • Don’t stare at the wheel in front of you; keep your sight at least 5-10 meters up the road to react to changes being made upfront.
  • Always keep your fingers/hands on the brakes; you always need that extra quick stopping power.
  • Never overlap your front wheel with the back wheel of the rider in front of you; it’s a disaster waiting to happen if the bunch makes changes in front.
  • When eating or fiddling with your pockets, move to the back of the bunch.

Scenic and challenging routes

The two-day event offers a weekend of cycling for the whole family and is for cyclists who enjoy scenic and challenging routes – from beginners to experienced riders.
