SA's Marine Dynamics wins global sustainable tourism award

Cape Town - South African shark cage diving company, Marine Dynamics, scooped a prestigious eco-tourism award at the Skål World Congress, Sustainable Tourism Awards 2017, in Hyderabad, India on Friday 6 October.

Skål International is an organisation of tourism leaders around the world, "promoting global tourism and friendship".

Marine Dynamics won the award for Shark and Whale Eco-Tourism Benefiting Conservation and Community.

The popular shark cage diving company based in Gansbaai, Western Cape, is well-known for its marine research and conservation efforts, together with sister companies Dyer Island Cruises and the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary.

"Marine Dynamics tourism hub offers five-star shark cage diving and whale watching or eco-tours in the unique Dyer Island ecosystem of Gansbaai," says Marine Dynamics.

Marine Dynamics and its sister companies are Fair Trade Tourism certified and believe that, “Your Choice Makes a Difference".

"Through our environmental project, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, we are making a real difference for conservation and the community," says the award-winning company.

The company efforts include conservation projects for the survival of the African penguin, it supports community education, builds effective tourism and conservation partnerships, and conducts fundraising towards research, conservation and education.

According to Marine Dynamics, it is "conducting effective science through daily observational data to translate into evidence-based conservation initiatives and legislation".       

Key projects

  • African penguin conservation which includes a nest project providing critical protection during the penguin fledgling stage; and in 2015 we opened a rehabilitation facility, the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary.   • Research on great white sharks by marine biologists includes tagging and tracking, behavioural surveys, wound healing, environmental parameter monitoring and population studies.
  • Support of whale and dolphin research. 
  • Handling all marine animal rescue, strandings and sampling on our coastline.
  • Environmental Education Programme known as DEEP educates a dedicated group of young learners for three years measuring the impact and growth of each individual.
  • Marine pollution efforts include the unique fishing line bin project and monthly beach clean ups.

"The Dyer Island ecosystem is unique and fragile and it is the priority of Marine Dynamics to ensure the marine life in the area flourish and remain for many years to come," adds Marine Dynamics.
