Slumdog Millionaire setting inspires first Slum Museum in Mumbai

Cape Town - Mumbai's Dharavi slum - one of the largest in Asia - is set to become home to the world's first slum museum come February 2016.

The iconic metropolis on India's west coast, has set the backdrop to many award-winning books and movies - including Danny Boyle's 2008 hit film, Slumdog Millionaire.

In 2016, however, the slum hopes to attract visitors to its buzzing core with the opening of a small pop-up museum showcasing some of the myriads of objects that are produced every year in Dharavi.

The attraction, named the Design Museum Dharavi, will be a mobile museum and, according to Spanish artist Jorge Rubio, who is behind the initiative, "the first museum ever created in a slum".

Design Museum Dharavi will operate for two months only, displaying everything from pottery and textiles to recycled items.

Organisers say they want to challenge people's perceptions of slums by highlighting the creative talent that resides in them.
