Thuso Mbedu’s list of top 3 cities to visit

Emmy nominated actress Thuso Mbedu often travels to top destinations for work. Recently, she went to Georgia, USA to work on The Underground Railroad, a series directed by Barry Jenkins for Amazon. The South African actress spoke with Capitec about the top 3 cities she likes to visit most.

When a trip comes up, Thuso makes a point of checking all the costs so that she can budget accordingly. “I’m lucky to have a very knowledgeable manager. She’ll help me to find a nice place to stay (I recently became friends with Airbnb) and she’ll compile a ‘places-to-go’ list.”

If she’s not preparing for an audition, Thuso loves exploring new places. Here she tells us a bit about her favourite cities in the world.

1.  Los Angeles, USA

I grew up in KwaZulu-Natal and this city reminds me of Durban. The people are friendly, the weather is humid and there’s lots to do. I stayed at Loews Hotel and loved it. My room even had a view of the Hollywood sign. There’s also a great Chinese eatery near Baldwin Hills where you can grab a bite to recover from jetlag.

Places to visit

One of the coolest spots must be Venice Beach with its world-famous coastline, which is only a few miles south from the heart of Hollywood. There’s tons of photo opportunities and iconic locations, like Muscle Beach.

If you want to shop, head for the Citadel Outlets. It’s a shopping centre that houses more than 130 top branded stores, including Bally, Zwilling Henckel and Madaluxe.

I try to be safe by not carrying cash and using my Capitec credit card to pay. There are no currency conversion fees, which means I save a lot of money that I can rather spend on other experiences.

Travel tip: Remember to pack sneakers, shorts, shades and sunscreen. If I’m going to use Uber, I go with the UberPool option. You share a ride with people going in the same direction, making it more affordable. And who knows who you might meet on the way?

2. Seville, Spain

This is an absolute gorgeous city with a rich history. It’s also home to many of the Game of Thrones locations, like the kingdoms of Dorne and Meereen.

I stayed at Hotel Casa 1800 Sevilla. This restored 19th century mansion is close to many of Seville’s best attractions. The food is definitely one of my favourite things about this city, particularly the pork and stewed beef. I ate at too many places and loved them all!

Places to visit

Calle Sierpes, a famous shopping street lined with chain stores, boutique shops and cafés. I enjoyed taking a walk down the historic street and admiring all the architecture. If you use your card to pay for something, you must show your ID. So, have this on hand.

Travel tip: The best time to visit is April and May, when the weather is balmy and not too wet or hot when getting around.

3. Durban, South Africa

This is home. Here, the air is fresher and the water sweeter. Umhlanga is probably one of the best places to stay.

Places to visit

If you have time, take a trip out to Howick. It’s an opportunity to take in the beauty of Howick Falls or visit the place where Nelson Mandela was arrested.

Durban’s beaches are also a must-visit, especially for surfers. When it comes to shopping I tend to go wherever my stylish sister leads me! If I’m planning to spend a little more than usual, I just use the Capitec app to update my limits for card purchases.

Travel tip: Pack a beach dress, flip-flops, shades and sunscreen. Also, if you have an afro, don’t straighten it. Because of the humid weather, your hair simply won’t stay straight!
