Cape Town - The Wavescape Art Board Project auction, which was held on Tuesday evening at Tiger's Milk in Muizenberg, raised a total of R211 500, with two designer surfboards each selling for over R50 000.
Controversial artist Brett Murray - famous for his artwork, 'The Spear' - designed a surfboard named 'Pay back the f***ing money'. The board was sold for R50 000.
The artwork 'Submarine Magic' by Beezy Bailey fetched a hefty R53 000.
Nine of South Africa’s greatest artists - Murray and Bailey, as well as Andrew Whitehouse, Chris Brehem, Conn Bertish, Jake Aikman, One Love Studio, Sanell Aggenbach and Asha Zero - created designer surfboards for the Wavescape Art Board Project.
Organisers of the Wavescape Festival asked the artists to transform nine “Fish” surfboards (a shorter and wider board with a fish tail) into artworks.

The boards were auctioned off by comedian Rob van Vuuren.
Proceeds of the auction will be donated to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the Waves-For-Change trauma programme, Shark Spotters, Cancer Dojo and the Little Optimist Trust.
