Weather Update: Late winter snow hunting ahead

Cape Town - The south coast and the Free State can brace for rain on Friday, 19 August, and snow is expected to make landfall on Saturday.


The South African Weather Service says a cold front approaches from the south-west, causing a 60% chance of rain from Hermanus to Jeffrey's Bay on Friday. Surrounding areas, from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth can expect a 30% chance of rain. Moving north-east, the most of the Free State can expect a 60% chance of rain. Surrounding areas, the eastern part of the Eastern Cape, western parts KwaZuku-Natal, most of the North West province and eastern parts of the Northern cape can expect a 30% chance of rain. 

Minimum temperatures will be cool to cold, but very cold in parts of the Free State and the Northern cape and warm along the east coast. Maximum temperatures will be mostly cool, but cold in the southern parts of the Northern Cape and warm in the northern part of the Northern Cape, KZN and parts of Limpopo and the North West province.

Snow Report says the Central and Southern Drakensberg as well as the Maluti Mountains in Lesotho can expect snow on Saturday, 20 August. The southern parts of SA will be cool, and the northern parts will be warm. Rain is expected along the east coast from the Tsitsikamma area to the Mozambique border. The KZN coast can expect a 60% chance of rain. 

On Sunday, afternoon and overnight snow over many of the Western Cape mountain ranges can be expected as another cold front makes landfall. Snow in the Western Cape will continue until Monday, and will spread to parts of the Northern and Eastern Cape.

The cold front also brings a 60% chance of rain to the Western Cape. Surrounding areas, southern parts of the Northern cape and western parts of the Eastern Cape can expect a 30% chance of rain. It will be mostly warm, but cool in the Free State and south-western parts of SA.

Graaf Reinet, Hogsback and other regions of Eastern Cape as well as the Eastern Cape Drakensberg and surrounds, including Dordrecht, Barkly East, Rhodes and Western Lesotho can expect some snow on Monday. On Monday night to Tuesday morning snow can be expected in the KZN midlands.

Temperatures for Friday, 19 August, will see Johannesburg in Gauteng reach a high of 22°C, Pretoria will reach a maximum of 25°C and Bloemfontein in the Free State will reach 23°C.

Along the coast, Cape Town will reach a high of 18°C, Port Elizabeth will reach 23°C and Durban will reach a mild 28°C.

Sutherland in the Northern Cape will drop to 2°C, the coldest temperature in SA for the day.
