Youth travel tips from a Saffa with Contiki’s most-liked travel gram out there

We all have that one amazing photo from a holiday that just sums up your mood from the trip, but this lucky South African managed to get her iconic pic from Vietnam featured on Contiki's Instagram account - with the most likes of the year!

The winning shot was taken by Khaya Binder a 29-year-old who took a year to explore the globe. The image features Ha Long Bay in Vietnam - a World Heritage site made up of green-spired islands surrounded by junk and tour boats, as well as kayaking travellers.

"This photo was taken from the viewpoint on Titop Island in Halong Bay, using only my iPhone, and required an exhausting 400 step climb to the top - all worth it of course!" says Binder to Traveller24. She travelled to the country on a Contiki tour at the beginning of 2018.

Born in Germany and raised in South Africa, Binder is an avid traveller and already has 41 countries under her belt. And while she is about to settled into a new job in 2019, she's by no means giving up on her wanderlust. She can't travel without her iPad, which keeps her occupied on long trips and makes a useful tool for researching her next destination!

When travelling she also makes sure to not skimp on sleep and get her daily dose of fruit and vegetables. "Travelling can take a toll on your body and it is very easy to get sick, which no one wants in a foreign country!"

In Vietnam, her favourite experience was the locals.

"They inspire me on the daily, they come from such hardships and have so little, yet they are so giving and happy. An excellent life lesson to take away."

She does advise those looking to travel to Vietnam to always check the weather forecasts - it was a lot colder in certain areas than she expected and that you should pack layers for all types of weather.

But how does one get such a stunning shot?

"There are so many amazing photo opportunities while travelling, just be inspired by your surroundings, and take photos of EVERYTHING. The more photos you take, the more chance you have of catching something amazing," says Binder.
