A group of five armed thieves surprised shoppers at a local Spar in Lady Frere as they loaded an entire ATM machine onto the back of a small bakkie.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning while the supermarket was at its busiest, according to store manager Jack Magingsa.
CCTV footage shows the armed men simply unplugging the ATM and loading it onto the back of a silver Opel Corsa bakkie. The machine, owned by Cash Paymaster Services, is used by the South African Social Security Agency to pay out grants.
"We just heard people screaming as soon as the guys walked in. One of the guys then shot at one of the cameras," said Magingsa.
"The store was really busy since people were withdrawing pension money," he added.
According to Magingsa, the ATM was loaded with cash by security officials that very morning.
"No arrests have been made at the moment, however, there is an investigation underway," said police spokesperson Captain Namhla Mdleleni.
Mdleleni confirmed the robbers made off with an undisclosed sum of money.
