- Restaurant owner Dishal Sooku has been praised for his swift action in saving a child.
- The girl had been a victim of an attempted kidnapping at Sooku's Johannesburg establishment.
- A man allegedly involved has since been charged with assault, attempted kidnapping and common assault.
Dishal Sooku, 38, became an overnight sensation when he thwarted the attempted kidnapping of a four-year-old girl at his restaurant on Thursday.
"I don't consider myself a hero, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time," he said.
Sooku is the owner of Bella Napoli Italian Kitchen at Goldman Crossing in Florida, Roodepoort, and also a martial arts buff.
In a CCTV video of the incident, two women and a little girl can be seen sitting at a table on the veranda of the restaurant.
A man suddenly jumps over the railing and lunges towards the child.
One of the women tries to grab the child from the man's grasp as Sooku tackles him to the ground and holds him, using a powerful chokehold.
The attacker is then handed over to security officials.
The humble Sooku spoke to News24 on Tuesday, saying he just did what anyone in his position would have done.
"But my years of experience with martial arts prepared me to react in the way I did," he said.
The man seen grabbing the child in the video was arrested and appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Naseem Slamang was charged with assault to cause grievous bodily harm, attempted kidnapping and common assault.
Slamang will remain in custody until his next appearance on 17 September.
