Harare - Crisis-hit Zimbabwe may be reaching a tipping point, but the First Family wants to prove it's carrying on as if everything's normal.

President Robert Mugabe, 92, was photographed surveying fresh produce at the Harare Agricultural Show on Thursday, not far from where representatives of local churches tried to protest earlier in the day.

Mugabe's two sons Robert Jnr and Chatunga were also at the event, as was wife Grace. So was Mugabe's only daughter Bona with her husband Simba Chikore, reports said.

There have been calls on social media for the longtime leader to address the nation following ugly clashes in Harare on Wednesday between police and civilians.

Police vehicles and a state broadcasting van were burnt and at least two stores looted after police threw teargas at vehicles and protesters suspected of involvement in a march organised by the main opposition MDC.

Hospitals and clinics in central Harare are reporting a surge in people complaining of respiratory problems and chest pains following the violence, according to a tweet from @ThisFlag1980, the group that is carrying on the protest movement started by Pastor Evan Mawarire, who is now in exile.

A march organised by opposition parties in Harare for Friday has not so far been sanctioned by police.
