Harare - At least five Zimbabwean junior police officers have appeared in court for allegedly beating up a woman and gauging her husband's eye out, says a report.
According to NewsDay, the accused police officers appeared in court on assault charges for beating up Yvonne Magora and her husband Washington Gezana.
It was alleged that about five months ago, the five police officers; Livingston Zvimba, Tendai Musungambira, Sunday Nyaude, Khululekani Dale and Evans Mashonganyika, beat up Magora for unknown reasons at the corner of Kenneth Kaunda Avenue and Julius Nyerere Way in the capital Harare, prompting her husband to intervene.
But soon after Gezana intervened, he was beaten up by the police officers with "batons, open hands and an unknown object, which then gouged his right eye".
The five junior police officers denied the charges, saying they could not be held accountable since the alleged incident occurred at night.
According to New Zimbabwe.com, both Magora and her husband were taken to Parirenyatwa hospital for treatment.
