With 12 senior police officials currently in court facing charges including fraud and corruption, questions are being asked as to how the South African Police Service (SAPS) can be fixed, and whether it can be fixed at all.

This, as the country's official crime statistics show that the police is losing the war against crime, with robbery with aggravating circumstances, rape and murder all on the rise. 

For example, the numbers of murders annually committed in South Africa has grown from a low of 15 609 in 2011/2012, to 21 325 in 2019/2020.
