President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday evening that the R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) would be reinstated until March 2022, following a week of widespread unrest in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

After more than R16 billion was paid to approximately 6.5 million monthly SRD recipients since May last year, the SRD expired in April 2021.
