During his Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) on Wednesday, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni announced that the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) would see a R1.196 billion budget cut to fund the business rescue processes of South African Airways (SAA).

The budget cut sparked outrage among opposition parties and civil society, with several questioning why the budget of an essential service had to be cut to fund an airline which had not made a profit since 2011.

Concerns were raised that the cut to the country's overall R105.4 billion police service budget - a roughly 1% cut - will see public safety further deteriorate as the country battled with gender-based violence, violent crime and farm murders.
