The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) warned South Africa in July that it would "open the fighting front" within South Africa’s borders should the country get involved in the conflict in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.

Militant group ISIS, described as a designated a terrorist organisation by the United Nations (UN), has been responsible for a number of terrorist attacks, including bombings in Paris, Beirut and Istanbul, killing hundreds.
